EWB National Council 2014 - Engineers Without Borders Australia
EWB National Council 2014

EWB's National Council is an annual meeting between EWB chapter representatives and staff each year for strategic planning, training and team building. This year we had over 100 delegates come together for a weekend of inspiration, learning and collaboration!

In 2014, the National Council was held at The Summit, Trafalgar East Victoria between 4-6 July, and was attended by over 100 delegates. Delegates consisted of chapter representatives from around Australia (a diverse mix of university students, corporate partner members and region members), National Office staff team, and representatives from EWB New Zealand (EWB NZ).

The major themes for the 2014 EWB National Council were:
  • Evaluating our current activities
  • Developing EWB's Vision for the year 2050
  • Celebrating EWB's impact across the chapters, membership and supporters.
Activities across these themes were facilitated across the three days.
Friday 4 July

Day One was focused on evaluating our current activities and communicating our impact to the sector. The activities which were undertaken
  • Region performances which showcased our chapter activities across Australia. Check out some photos of the performances here
  • Communicating our impact workshop facilitated by LeAnne Maloney, Clear Horizons. LeAnne introduced delegates to the program logic tool, and how this could be used to assess current and future chapter activities
  • EWB Australia's Special General Meeting (SGM) to elect new board members. A summary of the Board's role and its members can be found here
  • Train-the-trainer workshops.
  • Pitch presentations by students undertaking the exciting and ground-breaking EWB Incubator Program
  • Viewing of the inspiring "The Humanitarian Engineer" documentary created by Sheena Ong (a student of the EWB Incubator).
That was all covered on Day One!
Saturday 5 July
If you didn't think that was enough, National Council delegates were up bright and early for Day Two. The day was focused on EWB's vision for the sector in the year 2050. Our activities included:
As EWB approaches a review and refresh of our 2015 Strategic Aims, the outcomes of the 2050 Vision workshop will be used as a conversation starter for this piece of work.
Sunday 6 July
Despite the heavy celebrating, delegates were up and at it again on the Sunday morning. The morning session was filled with the following:
  • Various breakout groups with topics chosen by the delegates
  • Review and summary of the National Council, which morphed into Creative Region Presentations (aka interpretative dances).
Delegates headed back to Melbourne shortly after lunch inspired by the weekend's activities.
Next steps
EWB National Council is the keystone event on the EWB Tribe calendar. It provides an opportunity for delegates to network with other members, learn about our impact across the country, and directly influence EWB's agenda for the following 12 months and beyond. Delegates leave National Council reenergised and equipped to create and embed systematic change across the Australian engineering sector.
There will be an opportunity for all delegates and members to provide feedback on the National Council event shortly.
On behalf of EWB, I look forward to working with our membership, chapters and supporters to implement the ideas generated at EWB's National Council over the coming 12 months.
